The prosecution has asked for a sentence of 20 years in prison for Ardian Bitraj, the main official accused of stealing ALL 713 million in the Treasury and the Bank of Albania and 15 years in prison for Mimoza Bruzia, his collaborator.

Both these citizens will benefit from the accelerated procedure of the trial. If the court considers the Prosecution's request, their punishment will be much less than that.

Ardian Bitraj has said to have spent all the money. The scandal also involved the former governor of the Central Bank, Ardian Fullani and Inspector General, Elivar Golemi, both freed by court after arrest.

Nearly two months ago, Tirana First Instance Court handed down the jail terms for 10 employees who received relatively light sentences following a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty on the charges. One ex-bank employee, Bashkim Xhilaga, received a suspended sentence, based on his health condition.

Five months after Fullani's arrest, the parliament replaced him with Gent Sejko, former head of Societe Generale Bank in Albania.
