An army group in Turkey says it "has taken over" the country, as soldiers are positioned at strategic points in Istanbul and jets flying over Ankara. TVs said that what has been called a "peace council" now runs the country.

It remains unclear though who supports the group or who are its members. For now, top army officials are detained.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the country will overcome what he called an uprising by a minority and he still continues to be the President. He also told CNN Turk that the action was by a "parallel structure".

He has used this term in the past to refer to Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric based in the US accused by Erdogan of causing unrest. Mr Erdogan said he was on his way to Ankara and those involved in the action would pay a high price.
